Le Quotidien

Latest Local and World News in Senegal - Le Quotidien -
Le Quotidien is a major independent daily newspaper in Senegal, based in the capital of Dakar. It also publishes a glossy weekly, entitled Weekend.
Launched by owner/editor Madiambal Diagne—a former reporter for Dakar’s Wal Fadjri—and his Avenir Communications SA company in February 2003, Le Quotidien is generally critical of the government, as well as political and religious figures.
In July 2004 Diange was arrested pending charge by the government for publishing articles alleging fraud in the customs service and government interference in the judiciary. The arrest came from an alleged breach of Article 80 of the Penal Code, which mandates up to 5 years in jail for anyone convicted of “acts that might compromise public security or cause serious political problems.” He was released following international pressure and a press strike.
In 2006, Le Quotidien purchased its own press facilities, freeing it from the use of government owned printing facilities.
In 2007 the company’s attempt to launch a sister radio station in Dakar was halted by the government, but Premiere FM opened after appeal at the end of that year.

The New Times is a national English language newspaper in Rwanda. It was established in 1995 shortly after the end of the 1994 genocide. The paper states that it is privately owned, with two shareholders. They also used to have a Kinyarwanda-language weekly called Izuba Rirashe.
The New Times is published in Kigali from Monday to Saturday, with its sister paper the Sunday Times, appearing on Sundays. The New Times Online was launched in 2006. The New Times often conveys optimistic stories about events in Rwanda.
In May 2009 Human Rights Watch (HRW) described The New Times as a state-owned newspaper in a rebuttal to an editorial article that accused HRW of sanitizing people who were attempting to negate the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. The New Times did not publish the HRW rebuttal. President Paul Kagame has said that The New Times has been too servile to him and his party, and has asked the Aga Khan to launch an alternative.

Republic of Rwanda

For centuries, Rwanda existed as a centralized monarchy under a succession of Tutsi kings from one clan, who ruled through cattle chiefs, land chiefs and military chiefs. The king was supreme but the rest of the population, Bahutu, Batutsi and Batwa, lived in symbiotic harmony. In 1899, Rwanda became a German colony and, in 1919, the system of indirect rule continued with Rwanda as a mandate territory of the League of Nations, under Belgium.

Mozambique is the world’s 36th-largest country.

It is comparable in size to Turkey. Mozambique is located on the southeast coast of Africa.

It is bound by Eswatini to the south, South Africa to the southwest, Zimbabwe to the west, Zambia and Malawi to the northwest, Tanzania to the north and the Indian Ocean to the east.

The country is divided into two topographical regions by the Zambezi River.

To the north of the Zambezi River, the narrow coastal strip gives way to inland hills and low plateaus.

Rugged highlands are further west; they include the Niassa highlands, Namuli or Shire highlands, Angonia highlands, Tete highlands, and the Makonde plateau, covered with miombo woodlands.

To the south of the Zambezi River, the lowlands are broader, with the Mashonaland plateau and Lebombo Mountains located in the deep south.

The country is drained by five principal rivers and several smaller ones with the largest and most important the Zambezi.

The country has four notable lakes: Lake Niassa (or Malawi), Lake Chiuta, Lake Cahora Bassa and Lake Shirwa, all in the north.

The major cities are Maputo, Beira, Nampula, Tete, Quelimane, Chimoio, Pemba, Inhambane, Xai-Xai and Lichinga.

Le Mauricien

Latest Local and World News in Mauritius - Le Mauricien
Le Mauricien is a French-language newspaper, based and distributed in Mauritius. The newspaper, founded in 1908, is released daily and is one of the most read in Mauritius. The publishers, Le Mauricien Ltd., also publish Week-End, Week-End Scope and Turf Magazine. It is an independent newspaper.
Le Mauricien was founded in 1908 and celebrated its hundredth anniversary in 2008. Some former editors include Raoul Rivet, Andre Masson, Lindsay Riviere among others. The editor and director were Raoul Rivet from 1922 to 1957. “Le Mauricien” adopted the offset press in 1978 and subsequently experienced changes, namely by growing from four pages to the current forty-eight page daily edition. Its price has evolved as well. In 1978, the newspaper’s office was set on fire witch and was later deemed as a criminal act. Le Mauricien adopted a “midi” format known as the Berliner format in 2010. The pages increased to 48 and this becomes similar to leading papers elsewhere, like Le Figaro (France), The Guardian (UK). In 2012, Le Mauricien upgraded its website and aligned it with other papers where readers could send comments to published articles.
The Compact Tabloid Format
As from July 2014, “Le Mauricien” has adopted the compact tabloid format close to “The Times” of the UK. The pages have been reduced to 40 while the midi format was repealed. Compared to an older version of the same paper, the paper size is reduced by 55%. This adds to a new era in news publishing.
