MARCA COVER. Marca, is a Spanish national daily sport newspaper owned by Unidad Editorial. The newspaper focuses primarily on football, in particular the day-to-day activities of Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid and Rayo Vallecano. It has a daily readership of over 2,500,000, the highest in Spain for a daily newspaper, and more than half of sports readership.
EL PAIS COVER. El País is based in Madrid and it is owned by the Spanish media conglomerate PRISA. According to the Office of Justification of Dissemination (OJD), it is the second most circulated daily newspaper in Spain as of December 2017. El País is the third most read newspaper in Spanish online and one of three Madrid dailies considered to be national newspapers of record for Spain (along with El Mundo and ABC). Its headquarters and central editorial staff are located in Madrid, although there are regional offices in the principal Spanish cities (Barcelona, Seville, Valencia, Bilbao, Santiago de Compostela) where regional editions were produced until 2015. El País also produces a world edition in Madrid that is available online in Brazil (in Portuguese) and Hispanic America (in Spanish).
EL MUNDO COVER. El Mundo, formally El Mundo del Siglo Veintiuno, is the second largest printed daily newspaper in Spain. El Mundo (elmundo.es) is currently the second digital newspaper in Spanish. It was previously in the lead after El País introduced a payment system for access to the contents of its electronic version. It had 24 million unique web visitors per month in 2009. Many online readers are in Latin America, and the website has an edition for the Americas. However, digital expansion has done little to offset the decline in revenues from Spanish advertisers since 2008. The newspaper aims to increase digital profits via a subscription model.
ABC COVER. ABC was first published in Madrid on 1 January 1903 by Torcuato Luca de Tena y Álvarez-Ossorio. The founding publishing house was Prensa Española, which was led by the founder of the paper, Luca de Tena. ABC publishes in compact-sized stapled sheets, noticeably smaller than the loose tabloid format favoured by most Spanish dailies, including El País and El Mundo. Its cover distinctively features a full-size picture. ABC is known for generally supporting conservative political views and defending the Spanish monarchy. The paper has also a right-wing stance. Historically, it was noted in its heavy use of photography, and the front page is typically a large photo taking up to one third of the area. Recently, it has been recognized for its coverage of Spanish culture and arts.
LA VANGUARDIA COVER. La Vanguardia is a Spanish daily newspaper, founded in 1881. It is printed in Spanish and, since 3 May 2011, also in Catalan (Spanish copy is automatically translated into Catalan). It has its headquarters in Barcelona and is Catalonia’s leading newspaper. La Vanguardia, despite being mostly distributed in Catalonia, has Spain’s fourth-highest circulation among general-interest newspapers, trailing only the three main Madrid dailies – El País, El Mundo and ABC, all of which are national newspapers with offices and local editions throughout the country.
