Although a wide range of sports are covered in the newspaper, football is given by far most of the coverage. With some 24-28 pages out of 40 devoted to the sport on a daily basis, much of the journalism is speculative and sensationalist rather than the pure reporting of matches. In August 2009, Berlusconi sued the newspaper[16] after it published ten questions addressed to him (which he refused to answer).
La Repubblica used to be known for its critical stand vis-Ã -vis the Catholic Church, but this position has drastically changed after the onset of the papacy of Pope Francis.
Following the purchase of GEDI group by John Elkann, Carlo Verdelli was removed from his post as editor and replaced by Maurizio Molinari. Under his rule, la Repubblica sharply moved to the centre, abandoning its previous left-wing stances.
First published on 5 March 1876, Corriere della Sera is one of Italy’s oldest newspapers and is Italy’s most read newspaper. Its masthead has remained unchanged since its first edition in 1876.
Today its main competitors are Rome’s la Repubblica and Turin’s La Stampa.
During the coronavirus pandemic, Corriere della Sera leaked a draft decree to put into lockdown several northern provinces particularly affected by the virus. The leaked news sparked a panic exodus to the south, and the threat of further contagion led to a nationwide lockdown. Italy News Today
Leggo was established by Caltagirone Editore, owned by Francesco Gaetano Caltagirone, in 2001.
It publishes 15 local editions for the cities of Rome, Milan, Turin, Naples, Bologna, Florence, Padua, Venice, Verona, Bari, Genoa, Como, Bergamo, Brescia and Varese, with a total circulation of 1,050,000 copies.
The paper was founded by Vittorio Bersezio, a journalist and novelist, in February 1867.
Il Messaggero was founded in1878.
Il Messaggero is published in broadsheet format and is based in Rome.
In addition to its national edition the paper has 12 local editions, including those for the regions of Lazio, Umbria, Marche, Abruzzo and Tuscany. The daily has a center left political leaning.
